Virtual colonoscopy uses computed tomography images instead of a regular colonoscope to identify any polyps or growths inside the colon that may or may not lead to cancer. It is less invasive than routine colonoscopy as it does not need anesthesia or insertion of the colonoscope into the rectum. Before taking the CT scan, the colon is inflated with a small pump through the anus. Though it is a non-invasive procedure, any polyp or growth if found can only be removed with a regular colonoscopy.
