Restrictive respiratory diseases include pulmonary fibrosis, lung cancer, and sarcoidosis (a condition that causes lumps and nodules in the lungs, skin, eyes, and other body parts).

The symptoms of respiratory diseases may differ based on the type of respiratory disease. The common symptoms include:

  • Shortness of breath can be observed during and after the physical activity.

  • Tightness in the chest may be seen.

  • Wheezing and coughing may be noticed.

  • Touching any objects or surfaces containing germs and then touching the organs like mouth, nose, and eyes may spread the infection. This type of spreading is known as indirect contact. This type of spread is considered a lesser way of spreading.

Infants and young children, individuals with weakened immunity, and those with other health conditions are more susceptible to the risk of respiratory illness. Respiratory illnesses should not be neglected. They should be treated to avoid complications caused by respiratory infections.

How to Prevent Respiratory Diseases?

Preventive strategies help reduce the risk of respiratory diseases. These strategies are helpful when:

  • Respiratory viruses are responsible for causing a lot of diseases in the community.

  • Individuals or people surrounding them are sick due to exposure to the respiratory virus or if they are in the recovery phase.

  • If an individual is surrounded by risk factors for severe respiratory diseases.

  • Sometimes, the individual is unaware of things that can make others vulnerable to serious illness.

Preventive measures help prevent serious illnesses from spreading.

  • Healthy Lifestyle: Respiratory illnesses are on the rise because of the decline in air quality due to air pollution. Treating respiratory diseases is costly without health insurance. The wise idea is to take measures to prevent the respiratory disease. These include:

  • Quit the Habit of Smoking: Smoking may cause lung cancer and other diseases like idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (disease-causing scarring of the lungs) and COPD. It is advised to quit the smoking habit.

  • Reducing Indoor Pollution: Some sources, such as carpets, paint products, dust mites, pets, household cleaning supplies, and gas stoves releasing carbon monoxide, tend to cause indoor pollution, thereby reducing air quality. Poor air quality inside the house can cause respiratory illness. Hence, the house should be well-ventilated and clean. Home pollution can be avoided by choosing good indoor plants, activated charcoal, and essential oils. These act as natural air purifiers.

  • Healthy Diet: The diet should incorporate all the seasonal fruits and vegetables to get antioxidants and nutrients. A healthy diet helps keep the immune system strong. Herbal teas and soups help keep the body hydrated, and garlic can act as an antiviral and antibacterial.

  • Regular Exercise: Regular exercise can benefit the whole body. It helps maintain the respiratory and cardiovascular systems and may boost lung capacity. Regular exercise also increases blood flow and oxygen supply to the lungs and blood. Deep breathing helps fight stress and increases lung function. Researchers have noticed that exercise can help improve the immune system and lower the risk of developing heart disease.

Other preventive steps include:

  • Frequent washing of the hands with soap and water is to be done.

  • Close contact with affected individuals should be avoided.

  • Disinfecting the surfaces and cleaning them is necessary.

  • The affected person should stay at home, and children who are sick must stay at home.

  • While sneezing and coughing, the mouth and nose should be covered. If tissue is not present, the upper sleeve or elbow should be used.

  • Vaccination helps protect against respiratory illnesses.

  • Masks or respirators must be used to protect.
