What could cause severe stomach pain, nausea, and diarrhea?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been experiencing severe stomach pain, nausea, and diarrhea for the past two days. I am currently 33 years old, and I have never had these symptoms before. I am concerned that I may have contracted an infection. The symptoms are so severe that I cannot even leave the house as I am constantly rushing to the bathroom. I have attempted some home remedies, but they have not relieved me. Could you please suggest anything to alleviate my symptoms or provide some relief? I am anxious to know if this is something serious that requires immediate treatment. Please guide.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

I have thoroughly reviewed your case history, and it appears to be acute gastroenteritis (a sudden inflammation or irritation of the gastrointestinal tract), considering the symptoms of nausea and diarrhea (frequent and loose or watery stools).

I suggest you the following:

  1. Avoid eating out and reheated meals for the next one to two weeks.

  2. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. If you have more than five stools per day, use ORS or oral rehydration solution sachets (one sachet in one liter of water) to maintain hydration and prevent electrolyte imbalance.

  3. Take Tablet Pantoprazole 40 mg half an hour before breakfast for five to seven days.

  4. For nausea, take tablet Domperidone 10 mg half an hour before breakfast and dinner.

  5. For colicky abdominal pain, you can use tablet Mebeverine 200 mg.

  6. Incorporate probiotics into your diet by consuming daily yogurt and commercially available probiotics once daily for seven days.

If your symptoms persist despite the above measures, further investigation is warranted, including stool analysis and blood tests to rule out infectious diarrhea.

If necessary, antibiotics like Rifaximin 550 mg can be prescribed after the aforementioned workup.

I hope this helps.

Please revert to assist you further.

Thank you.
