Abnormal bone growth in the ear occurs due to otosclerosis and benign tumors of the ear canal. Prolonged exposure to cold water increases the risk of having abnormal bone growth in the ears. These can cause severe hearing loss. Mild cases of otosclerosis are treated by using a hearing aid, and, in severe cases, stapedectomy is done.
