Can medical abortion be done at 4 weeks?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 4 weeks pregnant, and this is an unwanted pregnancy that I wish to terminate. My hCG level is 711, and my hemoglobin level is 10. Could you please tell me if I can undergo a medically induced abortion? Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com

I have read your query and understand your concerns. It is completely natural to feel concerned about an unwanted pregnancy, as pregnancy has physical, mental, and psychological effects on quality of life. This is why pregnancy planning is important.

A medically induced abortion can be done at an early stage of pregnancy. At this point, an anti-progesterone medication is used before Misoprostol. This is because, at this very early stage, the pregnancy does not yet have a well-formed structure inside the uterus (attachment removed to protect the identity of the patient). The most effective way to medically terminate the pregnancy is to block the hormone that supports it. This hormone is progesterone, which is why an anti-progesterone medicine is given first, followed by Misoprostol.

A combination pack containing Mifepristone 200 mg and Misoprostol 800 micrograms is commonly used. Mifepristone 200 mg is taken orally, and after 24 hours, four tablets of Misoprostol, totaling 800 micrograms, are placed under the tongue and allowed to dissolve. This process leads to medical termination of the pregnancy. Bleeding that occurs is usually slightly heavier than a normal menstrual period. Therefore, it is possible to medically terminate an unwanted pregnancy at 4 weeks.

Kindly revert if there are any queries.

Thank you.
