Hi doctor,

I had an abortion two weeks ago, and the bleeding had stopped. However, I have started noticing blood every time I urinate. Is this normal?

Please guide.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Two weeks after an abortion, it is common to experience some light bleeding or spotting. However, if you notice bleeding specifically when you urinate, it is important to clarify the source.

Is the blood coming from the vagina or from the urine itself? If the blood is coming from the vagina, it may be due to normal post-abortion bleeding that has restarted, retained products of conception, or hormonal withdrawal bleeding.

After an abortion, it is typical to have bleeding on and off for two to four weeks. If the bleeding is light and not accompanied by severe pain or fever, it may be normal.

If the blood is mixed in the urine, it could indicate a urinary issue, such as a urinary tract infection (UTI), especially if you also experience burning sensations while urinating, a frequent urge to urinate, or lower abdominal discomfort.

A more serious but less common cause could be retained products of conception, particularly if you have persistent uterine bleeding, cramping, or foul-smelling discharge.

You should seek urgent medical attention if you experience heavy bleeding (soaking a pad every hour), severe lower abdominal pain, fever, foul-smelling discharge, or dizziness.

If the bleeding is light and consists of only small amounts, it may be normal post-abortion spotting. However, since you mentioned it occurs every time you urinate, I strongly recommend that you get a check-up to determine the source.

Please let me know:

  1. Do you experience burning when passing urine?

  2. Is the blood bright red or pink?

  3. Do you have abdominal cramps?

If you found this information helpful, I would greatly appreciate your feedback. Wishing you comfort and steady improvement ahead.

Thank you.
