Is swallowing a plum seed dangerous?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I mistakenly swallowed one medium‑sized plum seed at ten o’clock this morning. I feel that something is stuck in my throat, but I am able to eat other foods such as dosa and rice.

Is it harmful?

If it is harmful, what emergency medicine should I take?

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understood your concern.

Swallowing a medium-sized plum seed is usually not harmful, and, in most cases, it passes through the digestive tract naturally without causing any problems. Since you can eat foods like dosa and rice without difficulty, it is a good sign that the seed has likely moved down or is not causing a major blockage.

However, the sensation of something being stuck in your throat may be due to minor irritation or the seed being temporarily lodged near the throat. Try drinking warm water or eating soft foods like bananas or porridge to help ease the discomfort.

There is no emergency medicine required, and you should not take anything to try to dissolve the seed. It is important to monitor your condition. If you develop pain, persistent throat discomfort, difficulty swallowing, choking, vomiting, or notice blood in your stools or saliva, you should seek medical attention immediately. In the meantime, stay hydrated, eat soft foods, and observe your stool over the next couple of days to ensure the seed passes.

I hope that this answers your query.

Kindly follow up if you have more doubts.

Thank you.
