Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

How do I take Accutane? I am a 16-year-old male and tired of my acne. I have been recommended Accutane but also Retinol. Should I skip Retinol and immediately go for Accutane or try Retinol first, and if it does not work, then try Accutane?

Thank you.

Hello,

Thank you for stopping by!

I am here to provide expert opinions on your medical issues.

Accutane (Isotretinoin) is a retinoid group of drugs that can be bought only after a dermatologist's prescription. This is prescribed only in severe cases of acne and where there is no response due to usual acne modalities. Monotherapy with topical Retinoid cream or retinol is usually prescribed in mild to moderate cases of acne. So the severity of acne in your case will decide what treatment to start. Also, since you are a minor (16 years of age), consent from your parents will be required if Accutane needs to be started. In conclusion, please consult a dermatologist and let them guide you after a proper clinical examination.

Thanks and regards.
