I am 19. How to manage my acne mostly around the jawline?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I started getting acne when I was 14, mainly on my forehead then I went on Accutane and it completely cleared up, it was clear throughout the time I was 16, now I am 19 and this year for the past seven to eight months the acne has came back but this mostly focused on the jawline and it is left horrible dark acne spots all over as well as constantly breaking out.

I went to the dermatologist and she gave me Lymecycline and Epiduo, but my skin is getting even worse, and I have been using it for five weeks.

Please advise.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com

I am very sorry about your medical condition, and I am glad that you are paying attention to changes in your body system. But do not worry, I am here to take care of you. Thanks for sharing that.

I believe your acneiform eruption and exfoliating dermatitis that is linked to internal inflammation. Here is a breakdown of what might be happening and how to approach it beyond temporary fixes:

  1. Hormonal imbalance - Especially if acne worsens around your period, on your jawline or chin, or during stress.

  2. Oily skin and clogged pores - If your skin is naturally oily, topical creams alone may not fully manage it.

  3. Diet or gut health - High sugar, dairy, or processed foods can trigger inflammation in sensitive people.

  4. Incorrect skincare - Using harsh products or over-washing can damage your skin barrier.

I would suggest the following treatment plan:

Medical options (Stronger but effective):

  • Oral medications: Tab Doxycycline 100mg orally thrice daily for two weeks

  • Hormonal treatments (like birth control or Spironolactone for women) twice daily for a month

  • Topical Isotretinoin (Accutane) twice daily for a month

Reply to me if you have more concerns or questions by scheduling a direct appointment or follow-up via chat, phone, or video consultation.

I hope this answers your query.

Thank you.
