What is the treatment for acne?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am an 18-year-old girl, and I have acne. It is lowering my confidence so much. I have tried my best to get rid of it. I cleaned my diet and started taking ginger shots, but the acne is spreading. I tried Benzoyl peroxide for three days, but I feel like I should not do it, so I decided to leave it today. I have acne on my cheeks, chin, forehead, and one on my right jaw, which is lowering my confidence. My college is about to start. And I want to make a good impression on everyone. Please help me with this situation.

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

I am very sorry about your medical condition, and I am glad that you are paying attention to changes in your body system. I believe your acneiform eruption and exfoliating dermatitis are linked to internal inflammation. Here is a breakdown of what might be happening and how to approach it beyond temporary fixes:

Why does your acne keep coming back?

  1. Hormonal imbalance - Especially if acne worsens around your period, on your jawline, chin, or during stress.
  2. Oily skin and clogged pores - If your skin is naturally oily, topical creams alone may not fully manage it.
  3. Diet or gut health - High sugar, dairy, or processed foods can trigger inflammation in sensitive people.
  4. Incorrect skincare - Using harsh products or over-washing can damage your skin barrier.

Long-term treatment options are as follows:

  1. Oral medications: Tablet Doxycycline 100 mg (milligrams) thrice daily for two weeks.

  2. Hormonal treatments (like birth control or Spironolactone for women) twice a day for one month, and topical Isotretinoin (Accutane) twice a day for one month.

I hope this information will help you.

Feel free to reach out in case of further queries.

Thanks.
