What treatments are effective for persistent teenage acne?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had acne during my teenage years and have tried many treatments, but it has not gone away. Recently, I developed red, itchy, and inflamed bumps on my chin. I also have acne and acne scars on my cheeks. I am looking for advice on what to do.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

For the red, itchy, inflamed bumps (possible perioral dermatitis or acne):

  1. Stop harsh products: Avoid overcleansing, scrubbing, or using alcohol-based products, as they can worsen irritation.

  2. Gentle cleanser: Use a mild, fragrance-free cleanser.

Anti-inflammatory treatment:

Antihistaminics, local or systemic:

  1. For active acne (cheeks and chin): Benzoyl peroxide.

  2. Niacinamide (10 percent): Reduces redness and oiliness.

For acne scars:

  1. Retinoid: Adapalene (or prescription Tretinoin) helps remodel collagen over time.

  2. Laser removal of scars.

Lifestyle adjustments:

  1. Diet: Reduce dairy, sugar, and processed foods (linked to breakouts in some people).

  2. Pillow-cases: Change them twice a week and avoid touching your face.

  3. Stress management: Stress worsens acne. Try sleeping, exercising, or meditating.

Follow up with your dermatologist.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Thank you.
