I used supplements for years. Why do I have liver problems?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Liver damage due to taking poor-quality or contaminated supplements containing heavy metals (lead, arsenic, mercury, cadmium) and steroids or stimulants not mentioned on labels. Took it continuously for six to seven years, still facing liver issues after eight years elevated SGPT and bilirubin.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Long-term exposure to contaminated or poor-quality supplements can cause lasting liver injury, and in some cases, the effects persist even years after stopping them. Below is a clear explanation of what may be happening and what you can do now.

Long-term exposure (six to seven years) can cause chronic liver injury because heavy metals accumulate in the liver and are very slow to clear. They cause oxidative stress, leading to damage in hepatocytes (liver cells). They may lead to chronic hepatitis, fibrosis, or even cirrhosis over time. Even eight years after stopping, metals like cadmium or lead can remain in tissues and continue to cause mild inflammation. Do not take any herbal detox products, as unregulated herbs can further worsen liver injury. Avoid protein powders or supplements unless medically verified and third-party tested. Avoid alcohol, unnecessary medications, or painkillers like Diclofenac repeatedly.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you.
