Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I used to take ADHD psychiatric medicine for two years. I stopped it permanently two weeks ago, and now I am suffering from sexual dysfunction. What to do?
Please help.
Thank you.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
Sexual side effects may happen when one discontinues the usage of psychiatric or ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) medicines, mostly in the initial few weeks after the adjustment of the brain and the body to changes.
The problems that one might face include low libido, erectile dysfunction, loss of sensitivity, and difficulty reaching orgasm. Those problems are usually temporary and can be improved in time.
However, stress, anxiety, poor sleep, and constant attention to one's symptoms make it harder for one. Erectile dysfunction is a condition that can appear functionally during that period and not necessarily permanently.
As you discontinued the medicines two weeks ago, it is too early now to expect immediate recovery. Concentrate on good sleep, physical activity, hydration, nutrition, reduction of pornography, and/or excessive checking and stress management.
Do not discontinue or change the drugs on your own; consult your psychiatrist because abrupt discontinuation can negatively affect your mood and attention.
Could you tell me which ADHD medicine you use and which sexual symptoms you have (low libido, erectile dysfunction, sensitivity problems, etc.)?
I hope this explanation has been clear and helpful, and I wish you continued good health and wellness.
Thank you.
