What could be done to manage ADHD in preschool kids?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I recently came across some information about Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and how it relates to human adaptation. I am really curious to learn more, especially because understanding this could help me adapt my approach if any of the kids I work with have ADHD. Could you share some insights or resources on this? I want to make sure I am doing everything I can to support my students in the best way possible.

Please guide.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

ADHD (Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects a person's behavior, memory, motor skills, or ability to learn)is often discussed in terms of challenges. ADHD might have advantages as well.

Historically, humans who were hunters might have benefited from traits like hyperfocus on tasks, quick response to stimuli, and the ability to notice and react to environmental changes rapidly - associated with ADHD. These traits have helped in hunting, where being alert and responsive to the environment was critical for survival. As societies evolved and shifted towards farming, sustained attention and the ability to plan for the long term, became more valued.

In today’s world, the environment is less conducive to the spontaneous, high-energy behavior seen in ADHD. Understanding ADHD as part of a natural human variation, rather than a disorder, can help you appreciate the unique strengths these children might bring to a classroom—such as creativity, energy, and out-of-the-box thinking.

I recommend incorporating the following:

1. Involve some movement in lessons.

2. Allow short breaks.

3. Allow students to choose environments that work best for them.

4. Focus on the strengths of students with ADHD.

5. Positive reinforcement and getting to know each student’s individual needs.

6. Mindfulness exercises.

7. Deep breathing or short meditation sessions can be effective.

I hope that you get your answer.

Please let me know if you need any help.

Thank you.
