Can food restriction make my food allergies worse?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have allergies. I get rashes, itches, and breathing issues after having an allergic attack. Two months back, I did a skin prick test and I was advised to avoid eating a list of items for a year. So I started doing it and my doctor advised me to avoid eating wheat, milk, and milk products. I started losing weight.

When I tried to eat any of the products, the doctor advised me to avoid eating and my allergies got triggered more vigorously than they used to be before. I am taking medications as advised.

  1. Will I never be able to eat gluten and milk products?
  2. Do I need to avoid them?
  3. Does my allergy get triggered by anger and anxiety?

I have an IgE value of 636 UI/mL. I have anger issues.

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Kindly mention the wheal size of these allergens shown in the skin prick test.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

I have attached my reports of skin prick tests with asked information.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Your doctor has ignored some critical allergens in your test and paid attention only to food allergens. According to your skin prick test (attachment removed to protect patient's identity), you have significant allergies to house dust and two species of house dust mites.

It is best to have allergen immunotherapy. Kindly check the wheal size of allergens in your report and check yourself for the missed allergens in the final interpretation as you got a positive result for those.

Please mention whether you have rashes, itching, or breathing issues after consuming milk or milk products. Food allergies do not cause breathing and airway-related problems. Aeroallergens cause them. They are present in the air and they are inhaled when you breathe. Food allergens mainly cause gastric upset, warmth in the tummy, and gas or loose stools.

Kindly mention your symptoms clearly as milk does not cause your mentioned symptoms. Please mention the medications taken by you. Please mention whether you are taking any medication for anger management or anxiety. Please mention when the skin prick test was done and mention whether it was done by a technician or doctor. Immunoglobulin E is not significant as these are more important for those allergens.

Skin prick reports are more valuable than blood immunocap testing. It is a test that measures specific IgE (immunoglobulin E) against each allergen. Anger and anxiety can cause similar symptoms like allergy by triggering nerves around the nose. Allergy is troublesome but it is treatable. We can cure it completely by taking appropriate vaccines. Vaccines taken for allergies are otherwise known as allergen immunotherapy.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

A skin prick test was done by a technician. I got stomach upsets, heartburns, and slight itching on my skin after consuming my allergic foods as mentioned above. I am taking Budamate 200 mcg inhaler, Momeflo nasal spray, and Telekast 10 mg. I do not take any medicines for anger or anxiety. I have not consulted a psychologist. I am concerned about my allergies as it triggered me for a long time.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Please mention the reason for taking the Budamate inhaler (Formoterol with Budesonide). Please mention whether you have any respiratory problems. You need to understand that your problem is not a serious issue to become tense. To get your condition settled, try to continue taking the same medications and follow the same precautions. Please mention whether you have any nose block, runny nose, nasal itching, watering eyes, reduced sense of smell, wheezing, breathlessness, cough, chest congestion, or any altered bowel and bladder habits.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
