Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
Whenever I walk outside or go anywhere, I get exposed to fleas from dogs or cats. Their bites cause swelling and itching on my body. After one to two days, a watery but thick fluid oozes from the swollen areas, and a few days later, the spots turn dark.
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
Thank you so much for sharing your concern with me.
I am really sorry for what you are going through, and I can completely understand your concern. Do not worry, I will try my best to explain and give you appropriate management.
From your description, it appears that you are experiencing a strong allergic reaction to flea bites, a condition often referred to as papular urticaria. In some individuals, bites from fleas or other insects trigger an exaggerated skin reaction, leading to intensely itchy, swollen bumps. Because of the inflammation and scratching, the lesions can sometimes ooze a clear or slightly thick fluid, and as they heal, they may leave dark marks (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation) on the skin.
To help manage this condition, it is important to treat both the skin reaction and prevent further bites.
For the skin reaction, apply a topical corticosteroid cream such as Mometasone furoate or Betamethasone valerate once daily for a few days to reduce inflammation, swelling, and itching. If itching is significant, take an oral antihistamine such as Cetirizine 10 mg once daily, preferably at night, to control the allergic response and reduce scratching. If any areas become very inflamed, painful, or show signs of infection (increasing redness, pus, warmth), a doctor should examine them. Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with them, and take the medicines with their consent.
Equally important is the prevention of flea exposure. Try to avoid direct contact with stray animals when possible, and wear long sleeves, full-length trousers, and socks when going outdoors in areas where fleas may be present. Using insect repellent on exposed skin or clothing may also reduce bites. If pets are present at home, ensuring they receive regular flea treatment and environmental cleaning is important to reduce the source of infestation.
To minimize the dark marks that appear after healing, avoid scratching the lesions and keep the skin well moisturized. Over time, these marks usually fade gradually, though it may take several weeks.
I hope it helps with your query.
Thank you.
