What could be done to resolve allergic rhinitis?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My 11-year-old daughter has been struggling with some serious allergy issues lately. Every morning, she starts sneezing like crazy, like a hundred times in a row! Then, she has runny nose and watery eyes for the rest of the day. Her doctor says it is allergic rhinitis, and the only solution seems to be popping a Cetirizine tablet, which just makes her sleepy in class. I hate seeing her suffer like this every day, I am wondering if there is anything new out there that could help. Are there any recent developments or treatments we should know about? Maybe some research breakthrough or a different approach to managing her allergies? I just want to find something that works so she can get through the day without feeling miserable. Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I appreciate the confidence you place in me for your healthcare consultation.

According to your statement, your daughter has been suffering from severe allergic rhinitis and she takes Cetirizine (antihistamine) to control the symptoms of her disease, but this medication makes her drowsy during her class time.

There are many antihistamines without sedation properties, like Fesoterodine, Loratadine, Desloratidine, Rupatidine, etc., which can also help to control her symptoms of allergic rhinitis without making her drowsy. Your daughter can choose any of these medications to control her symptoms. Even Montelukast (antihistamine) can control her symptoms.

She also can use modern intranasal corticosteroid sprays like Beclomethasone, Budesonide, Ciclesonide, Flunisolide, etc., which can also control her symptoms.

You should try to find out the triggering factors that may aggravate her symptoms of allergic rhinitis and avoid those triggering factors. This can help control her symptoms.

I hope this information helps provide some insight into your symptoms.

Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any further questions or concerns.

Thank you.
