Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My brother lost a few inches of hair in his mustache and beard without any reason. Is it pattern hair loss or something else? I thought pattern hair loss only happens on the scalp. Can pattern hair loss affect facial hair like a mustache and beard? Should he use minoxidil for his mustache? Is minoxidil safe to use on the face?
My brother is upset about the hair loss, mainly because it happened suddenly. Does pattern hair loss usually occur so quickly? I heard minoxidil can help with hair regrowth, but is it practical for facial hair? If not pattern hair loss, what could cause hair loss in the mustache and beard? Could it be a sign of something serious?
Kindly guide.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern. I will try to help.
From the history you have given, the sudden appearance of patchy hair loss can be taken as alopecia areata, an autoimmune disease where hair follicles are damaged. Regrowth of hair is possible when proper treatment is given at the correct time.
Kindly visit a doctor nearby to investigate and get treatment.
I hope this helps.
Thank you.
