Hello doctor,

I am a 40-year-old woman who was recently diagnosed with alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency after struggling for years with coughing and shortness of breath. I have never smoked, yet my doctor said my lungs show damage similar to that of a smoker’s.

I am really anxious about what this means for my future. I want to know the following:

  • Could this condition cause lung failure?
