Is it safe to use 10% AHA/BHA exfoliator weekly?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Is it safe to use a 10% AHA and BHA exfoliator once a week with proper care? I am interested in the skin-brightening benefits of AHA and the oil-control benefits of BHA, which is why I chose the exfoliator. Would it be appropriate for me to use it?

Please help.

Thank you in advance.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your concern. It is completely understandable to want better oil control and brighter-looking skin, and using skincare thoughtfully is very important.

A combined Alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) and Beta hydroxy acid (BHA) exfoliator with a 10 percent concentration can be used cautiously and should not be overused. If your skin is oily, acne-prone, or prone to clogged pores, BHA can help regulate oil, while AHA may gently improve dullness and uneven skin tone. However, skin at this stage tends to be more sensitive and naturally renews itself quickly, so strong or frequent exfoliation may lead to irritation, redness, burning, or even worsening of acne or pigmentation.

You may use the products having the AHA/BHA 10 percent exfoliator once a week only. Apply it at night in a small amount on completely dry skin, followed by a moisturizer. Always perform a patch test before first use. Avoid using it on the same day as other active ingredients such as retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, vitamin C, or physical scrubs. Maintain a routine that includes a gentle cleanser, a non-comedogenic moisturizer, and daily sunscreen in the morning, as exfoliants can increase sun sensitivity. If you experience stinging, peeling, or persistent redness, discontinue use immediately.

For long-term skin health, consistency with gentle cleansing, moisturizing, and sun protection often provides safer and more effective results.

I hope this helps address your concern.

Please feel free to share your valuable feedback for improved patient care.

Thank you.
