Does Amoxicillin cause diarrhea and nausea?
Patient's Query
Hello Doctor,I have been taking Amoxicillin 500mg three times daily for four days (out of ten). I had no problems with it for the first two days, but now I am starting to feel kind a bad. Yesterday, I had diarrhea and was nauseous; today, I began to feel bloated, and I could feel and hear the gurgling in my abdomen more than I usually can. I was wondering if this would be considered mild side effects or if I should see my doctor. I have an appointment on Monday, but should I see her sooner? (Also, I take 2.5 milligrams of Amlodipine daily for blood pressure).
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
This is gastritis due to Amoxicillin and also probably antibiotic-associated diarrhea. You should keep checking your blood pressure and if on the lower side you should withhold Amlodipine. Drink plenty of water and also ORS solution 100 to 200 ml along with each stool.
You should take antacids like tablet Pan DSR or an Esomeprazole-Domperidone combination once a day before breakfast, along with Amoxicillin. Also, include probiotics like Sporulac sachets or Cap Vizylac, taking them three times a day with a two hour gap between them and Amoxicillin, for five days.
If the diarrhea is severe and persists today, it is advisable to visit a doctor. In that case, Amoxicillin may need to be stopped, and you may be prescribed other antibiotics, such as Azithromycin.
I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.
Thank you!
