Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am 72 years old. I am concerned about my heart health, especially following a recent brush with cardiac arrest. I have been reading about amyloidosis and how it affects the heart. Given my age, I am concerned that I may be at risk for this ailment. Can you explain how amyloidosis affects my heart health and what symptoms I should check for? Are there any tests or screens you recommend for detecting amyloidosis early? What therapy options are available if I am diagnosed with the same?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
Amyloidosis occurs when abnormal protein deposits known as amyloid build in tissues and organs, including the heart. When amyloid deposits accumulate in the heart, they can stiffen the walls, making them less able to expand and contract, resulting in reduced blood flow and cardiac function. The heart muscle stiffens, reducing its ability to adequately pump blood, which leads to heart failure. Amyloid deposits can interfere with the heart's electrical circuitry, resulting in irregular beating. The disorder can also impair blood pressure management, resulting in symptoms such as dizziness and fainting.
Take care.
Thank you.
