I saw fresh blood after stool. Is it from creatine use?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I took five grams of creatine earlier in the day, and later in the day, I drank a local drink after eating chips and chicken.

After a while, I took another five grams of creatine. Later, I felt the urge to go to the toilet, and after passing stool, I noticed blood dripping from my anus when I wiped with tissue paper.

This has been happening occasionally recently, and the blood usually appears fresh and bright red.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Based on your description, the fresh, bright red blood appearing after bowel movements and the absence of pain are most likely due to minor rectal bleeding from hemorrhoids (piles) or a small anal fissure, both of which are common, especially if stools are hard or if you strain while passing them.

The blood’s bright red color suggests it is from the lower end of the digestive tract (near the anus), not from internal organs.

Your recent intake of creatine and certain foods or drinks is unlikely to directly cause rectal bleeding, although dehydration or constipation linked to creatine (if not taken with enough water) can aggravate hemorrhoids or fissures.

For now, I suggest the following -

  1. Make sure you drink plenty of water, eat more fiber-rich foods (vegetables, fruits, oats), and avoid straining during bowel movements.

  2. You can also take a warm sitz bath (sitting in warm water for 10 to15 minutes twice a day) to soothe the area.

  3. If bleeding continues, increases, or is accompanied by pain, dizziness, dark stools, or abdominal discomfort, please see a doctor in person.

  4. A proctologist or general surgeon can do a simple rectal exam to confirm if it is hemorrhoids or another cause.

Avoid taking excessive creatine (stick to a dose of three to five grams daily) and ensure you stay well-hydrated.

The symptoms you describe do not sound immediately dangerous, but should be evaluated if they persist or worsen.

I hope this helps.

Thank you and take care.

Regards.
