I have pain and swelling in the left ankle and knee with walking difficulty. Please help.

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 51 years old. I have been suffering from ankle joint pain and a swollen left knee for two months. I can walk, but I get pain in both ankle joints while walking, and I kind of limp while walking every step. It is tough to walk. When trying to get up from the chair, I struggle a bit, no pain, though, nor do I have back pain.

Also, standing continuously for more than 5 minutes causes pain in the feet. I am attaching my reports. I request you to suggest your solution so that I can get my free walk back. Also, I have attached photos of my knee. I also consulted a few doctors, attaching the prescription as well. I have BP and sugar. My BP is 140/90 mmHg. For BP, I use Telsartan H 80 and for sugar, Teneligliptin 20 mg.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for attaching pictures (attachment removed to protect patient identity) and a good description. I am concerned about you.

All the reports are normal, except for a few. Your ankle shows an injury in one of its bones. Or maybe the picture is not so clear, so I am unable to differentiate properly. And other things were vitamin D insufficiency. Other reports are normal. Because there is damage, or we can say, a fracture in the ankle joint, that is why it pains when you walk, and due to movement, swelling occurs.

In such cases, it needs to be fixed with plaster or pins. I would suggest you meet your nearby orthopedic doctor. He will fix it. Because if you do not fix it, there can be a dislocation, which can lead to more swelling and pain. While you walk, use support so there will not be much pressure on your ankle.

Are you taking the medicines prescribed above? Due to injury in the knee, there is a slight decrease in joint space or maybe arthritis. That has to be corrected with medications.

If you are not taking the medicines prescribed above, then please take the tablet. Calcium, Vitamin D 500 mg once daily after meals for ten days (it will help in bone healing as well as vitamin D insufficiency), tablet Ibuprofen 600 mg twice daily after meals (for pain and swelling) for the next five days, and tablet Pantop (Pantoprazole) 40 mg once a day before meals (for acidity caused by medicine).

Apply Diclofenac gel two to three times a day on the swelling. Do not walk much until it gets fixed. Consult a nearby orthopedist for bandaging and mobilization of the ankle. You can continue your BP and sugar medications as they are.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
