What could cause a lack of sense of smell from birth?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 23-year-old male, lacking a sense of smell, and I do not think I can smell things, I have been like that since I was born I think, maybe I did smell once or twice in my life and as I can remember it was a bad smell, other than that I cannot smell, I do not know how food or perfumes smell.

Kindly help

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern. I am sorry about your medical condition, and I am glad that it is good that you are paying attention to changes in your body. But do not worry I am here to take care of you. Regarding your symptoms, I believe you have developed a condition called anosmia. Anosmia is the partial or complete loss of the sense of smell. It can occur due to various causes, including nasal congestion from colds or allergies, nasal blockages like polyps, or damage to the olfactory nerves due to infections or injuries. Please answer the below questions.

1. Did you suffer from COVID-19 recently?

2. Kindly do a sinus X-ray and reply to me with the result.

3. Take one capsule of Zinc 1000 iu orally, once a day for one month.

If your symptoms persist, schedule another appointment for follow-up via chat, phone, or video consultation.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
