Does PPI treatment hide Barrett’s esophagus?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had two recent endoscopies which revealed nothing except a small antral gastritis. I am concerned because I was taking proton pump inhibitor (PPI), the weeks before the endoscopy, and I did not stop for the endoscopy: should the PPI treatment hide a Barrett’s esophagus?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

I am very sorry about your medical condition and I am glad that you are paying attention to changes in your body system. But do not worry. I am here to take care of you. Regarding your symptoms and diagnosis of antral gastritis using endoscopy, I will encourage you to continue with your proton pump inhibitor (PPI), as it is recommended as one of the best medicines for the treatment of gastritis and of course, the pain may hide the Barrett’s esophagus if you are persistent with the PPI.

Kindly consult a specialist doctor, talk with them, and take medications with their consent.

I hope that you got your answer.

Please let me know if you need help.

Thank you.
