What are the best ways to manage and overcome anxiety?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 34-year-old man weighing 79 kg, seeking help with a problem that began a year ago after losing my father, who had muscular dystrophy, while my mother was undergoing treatment for breast cancer. This stressful period triggered a phobia of chronic diseases like cancer or HIV (human immunodeficiency virus). Since then, I have experienced various symptoms such as throat infections, balanitis, heartburn, and chest pain, which doctors attribute to anxiety. My gastroenterologist prescribed Fludoc-10 (fluoxetine) and Pantocid 40 (Pantoprazole) for six months, but I worry about their long-term use. I am getting married in two months, but my constant fear and habit of reading about diseases make it hard to focus. Please suggest how I can overcome this anxiety and move forward.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

You are experiencing a health anxiety disorder, a specific type of anxiety disorder. Anxiety is a natural and essential part of your body’s defense mechanism against fear. It prepares your body and mind to face challenges, and without it, survival would be difficult. However, when anxiety is triggered by negative and irrational thoughts, it becomes a disorder. It is important to understand that anxiety symptoms, no matter how distressing, cannot cause physical issues like a heart attack.

To manage your anxiety, focus on building healthy habits. Exercise regularly, read about anxiety to understand it better, and include anxiety-reducing foods in your diet, such as nuts, raisins, and fruits. Engage in activities that are entertaining or creative to keep your mind occupied. Most importantly, develop a positive outlook and have faith in yourself and your higher power to help you overcome this challenge.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
