How does platelet replenishment help in aplastic anemia?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 18 years old, I have aplastic anemia. Now I use an immunosuppressive medicine that should help my body to start producing platelets. But once for half a week, I need a platelet replenishment. Recently doctors said I need as little replenishment as possible. But how can I control that, if my blood cells decrease to incompatible with life level?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com

I read your query and understand your concern. Do not worry. Regarding your diagnosis of aplastic anemia, all you need is a bone marrow transplant. The immunosuppressive medications you are using are used to target autoantibodies that are against your bone marrow and not for platelet production. Your doctor is right you do not need too many platelets because the function of platelets is to control bleeding and not for blood replacement. So kindly go for a bone marrow transplant, and take tablets. Ferrous sulfate 220 mg orally once a day, and eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. If your symptoms persist, schedule another appointment for follow-up via chat, phone, or video consultation. I hope I have cleared all your doubts.

Thank you.
