Why Arginine drips are administered?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Is the Tivortin (Arginine) drip a must to be administered for five consecutive days without fail? What are the consequences if it is not administered as required?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Tivortin (Arginine) drip is often prescribed during pregnancy to improve blood circulation to the uterus and placenta, which can help support the pregnancy, especially in cases of recurrent miscarriages or signs of fetal distress.

Is consistency important?

Yes, Tivortin is usually given continuously for five to seven days (or as prescribed) to ensure optimal blood flow and reduce the risk of complications. If the administration has been inconsistent, it may reduce the effectiveness, but it does not necessarily mean it will not work at all. However, skipping doses could lower its potential benefits.

Possible consequences of irregular administration:

  1. Reduced blood flow to the placenta (which could affect the baby's growth).

  2. Higher risk of complications (if blood circulation is a primary concern in your case).

  3. Less effectiveness in preventing miscarriage (especially if prescribed for that purpose).

What should you do?

  1. Talk to your doctor immediately to discuss whether to continue or restart the full course.

  2. If you missed some doses, do not double up on the drip; instead, resume as advised by your doctor.

  3. Continue with your other medications (Folic acid, Ferrous sulfate, Gelatin, and Progesterone) as prescribed.

  4. Since you have had four miscarriages, close monitoring is crucial. If you experience severe pain, bleeding, or unusual symptoms, seek medical help immediately.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Thank you.
