I am 26, male. How do I manage my breathing problems?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 26-year-old man experiencing trouble breathing, especially during exercise or when exposed to cold air. I often feel a tightness in my chest and start wheezing, and at times, I have coughing fits that keep me awake at night. My symptoms seem to worsen during spring and fall, and I have noticed that dust and my friend’s cat also trigger breathing problems. I used to be very active, but now I avoid physical activities because I am afraid of experiencing breathing difficulties.

Kindly advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

The symptoms described, such as shortness of breath, chest tightness, wheezing, and coughing that worsens with exercise, cold air, seasonal changes, dust, and cat exposure, are strongly suggestive of asthma, particularly allergic or exercise-induced asthma.

Asthma occurs when the airways become inflamed and overly sensitive, narrowing in response to triggers like allergens, cold air, or physical exertion.

This explains why activities once enjoyed have become difficult to continue. It is important to consult a doctor, ideally a primary care physician or a pulmonologist, for proper evaluation, lung function testing, and confirmation of the diagnosis.

I would suggest the following measures:

Inhalers, such as a quick-relief rescue inhaler like Albuterol, can ease acute symptoms, and possibly a daily preventive inhaler helps reduce airway inflammation.

Preventive measures such as managing triggers can make a big difference. This may include limiting exposure to dust and cats, using air filters, and wearing a scarf in cold weather. Since nighttime coughing and avoidance of activities show that symptoms are affecting quality of life, getting medical care promptly will help in regaining control and returning to an active lifestyle.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you.
