Is bronchial thermoplasty effective for severe asthma?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am at my wits' end with these attacks. I have been on every inhaler possible, but nothing seems to work anymore. I have had to call an ambulance three times this month already. I cannot sleep lying down; I sit up all night trying to catch my breath. My peak flow readings are getting worse every day despite using my steroid inhalers correctly. Even mild exercise triggers an attack now. My pulmonologist suggested bronchial thermoplasty, but I am scared of the procedure. Is it safe? What other options do I have? Will I ever be able to do normal things again? I am currently using four different inhalers, but I still feel like I am drowning.
Kindly suggest.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your frustration and concern about your worsening asthma symptoms despite using multiple inhalers. Please share your recent pulmonary function test (PFT) reports, immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels, and other relevant test results to better understand your condition. We will review these reports together to discuss your treatment options and determine the best course of action.
It is essential to ensure you are using your inhalers correctly to maximize medication effectiveness. Adhering to your prescribed inhaler regimen, including dosage and frequency, is crucial. We can also discuss the most suitable inhaler device for your needs to ensure optimal management of your condition. Bronchial thermoplasty is a safe and effective procedure for severe asthma with a low risk of complications. We will discuss its benefits and potential considerations for your specific case to help you make an informed decision.
Other treatment options include biologics such as Omalizumab, Mepolizumab, or Benralizumab, which may be effective for severe asthma. Anti-IgE therapy, particularly Omalizumab, can help reduce asthma symptoms and exacerbations. Additionally, bronchial valve treatment, a minimally invasive procedure, may help improve lung function. Managing your asthma effectively also involves lifestyle changes. We will work together to develop a personalized asthma action plan. Identifying and avoiding triggers that exacerbate your asthma is important, and I can help you create an exercise plan that accommodates your condition while maintaining physical activity.
As the next steps, we will schedule a follow-up appointment to discuss your recent reports, inhaler technique, and treatment options in more detail. Ensuring compliance and adherence to your prescribed inhalers is key, and we will work together to make sure you are using them correctly and consistently.
I hope this helps.
Thank you.
