Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My asthma has become completely uncontrollable despite being on the maximum doses of multiple inhalers, Montelukast, and frequent courses of oral steroids. I have been to the emergency room three times in the past two months. My pulmonologist mentioned Tezspire as a potential option since I have already undergone unsuccessful trials of both Nucala and Fasenra.
The issue is that my insurance provider is denying coverage, stating that I have not failed enough other biologics" to qualify. My eosinophil count is not particularly high, but my symptoms are severely impacting my life. I regularly miss work. I am a 45-year-old accountant and I barely leave my house for fear of encountering triggers.
Is Tezspire different enough from the other biologics to justify fighting for coverage? Would an appeal process be likely to succeed based on my medical history? Additionally, are there any financial assistance programs that could help with the cost? I am desperate for relief and willing to explore any possible options.
Kindly help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
Tezspire (Tezepelumab) differs from Nucala and Fasenra because it targets thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP), an upstream driver of multiple asthma pathways. This makes it effective even in cases where eosinophil levels are not significantly elevated.
Your history of emergency room visits, steroid dependence, and unsuccessful biologic treatments strengthens your case for an appeal. Your pulmonologist can submit additional documentation highlighting the severity of your uncontrolled symptoms and the medical necessity of Tezspire. Additionally, Tezspire’s manufacturer offers a patient assistance program that may help cover the cost.
I hope this information helps you.
Please let us know if you have any further queries.
Thank you.
