Is atopic dermatitis lifelong?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My five-year-old son has been dealing with this pesky skin issue. It gets all itchy, crusty, and sometimes even oozes and hurts.

  1. The doctors mentioned something about it being atopic dermatitis, but I am not entirely sure what that means. Is it like a lifelong thing?
  2. Can you shed some light on what exactly atopic dermatitis is and what we can do about it?
  3. Are there any treatments or remedies that might help soothe his skin and make him feel better?

I hate seeing him uncomfortable like this.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Atopic dermatitis, often called eczema, is a chronic skin condition characterized by dry, itchy, inflamed skin. It is commonly seen in children but can persist into adulthood.

Treatment usually involves a combination of moisturizers, topical corticosteroids, or calcineurin inhibitors to reduce inflammation, and antihistamines to relieve itching. In severe cases, oral medications or light therapy may be prescribed. Home remedies include keeping the skin moisturized, avoiding irritants and allergens, taking short, lukewarm baths, and wearing soft, breathable fabrics.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
