Why do my eczema patches at 55 peel and look so defined?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I’m a 55-year-old woman who has had eczema and atopic dermatitis on and off most of my life, but lately the patches on my arms and legs look different. They are super dry, peel a lot, and have these really defined borders instead of just random irritation.

Some spots almost look like plaques now, especially in winter or after hot showers. Steroid creams help temporarily, but the patches always seem to come back in the exact same places.

Is it normal for eczema patches to become more peeling and sharply defined with age, or should I get them rechecked to rule out another skin condition?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com

I have read your query and can understand your concern.

Yes, I read about your skin problem, and I can really understand how problematic it is for you. But do not worry; I will try my best to give you a detailed explanation and proper suggestions about treatment.

So firstly, as you told me, you have eczema or atopic dermatitis; yes, you are right because in these types of skin disorders, skin usually loses more water, which will lead to dryness of skin and eventually peel off after some time. So first, you have to apply moisturizer two to three times to keep your skin hydrated, and it also helps in improving your skin barrier.

Secondly, yes, I can advise you on ointments that do not contain steroids, and you can apply them for a longer time without any side effects, like Tacrolimus or Pimecrolimus. Avoid strong and harsh soap and detergents, and also fragrance products.

So I requested that you give yourself more specific and appropriate treatment advice, but for that, I need some more information, for example, pictures of lesions, your country, and any other comorbidities.

So please try to follow up if you feel this answer would be helpful for you.

And I hope you will feel better soon.

Thank you.
