Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
My 19-year-old son was recently diagnosed with ADHD after a psychological evaluation. He is struggling to focus on college work despite starting Methylphenidate 10 mg. Are these medicines meant to be taken lifelong or only during stressful periods?
Also, can ADHD affect sleep or cause mood swings if the dose is not properly balanced? We are trying to support him with routines and less screen time. Are there proven behavioural strategies that can help improve concentration and impulsivity naturally, along with medicines?
Thanks.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
I understand how concerned you must feel watching your son struggle with concentration and adjustment at college after his recent ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) diagnosis. Methylphenidate is a commonly prescribed and effective medication for ADHD, but it often requires some time and dose adjustment to find the level that works best without causing side effects.
These medicines are not always lifelong; some people use them only during periods when focus and organization are especially important, such as during studies or work, while others benefit from long-term use if symptoms persist. ADHD itself can affect sleep patterns and mood, and if the medication dose is too high or taken too late in the day, it may make it harder to fall asleep or cause irritability.
It is important to discuss these effects with his doctor, who can adjust the timing or dosage accordingly. Alongside medication, behavioral and lifestyle strategies can make a real difference. Keeping a regular daily routine, setting clear goals, breaking tasks into smaller steps, using planners or reminder apps, and limiting distractions such as screens during study time are all helpful. Regular physical activity, enough sleep, and mindfulness exercises can also improve focus and reduce impulsivity.
Cognitive behavioral therapy and ADHD coaching are proven to help young adults build structure and emotional control. You are already doing the right thing by providing understanding and guidance, and with consistent support and proper management, your son can adapt well and succeed in his studies and daily life.
I hope this information will help you.
Thanks.
