What are some ways of dealing with a child that has autism?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My five-year-old nephew was recently diagnosed with autism, and I am really worried about his future. I have heard that autism affects the brain, but I do not fully understand how. What exactly is happening in his brain that is different from other kids? Are there treatments that can help him develop more typically? I am concerned about his ability to communicate, make friends, and live independently. What kind of support will he need as he grows up? Are there any promising new therapies or research breakthroughs? I want to be supportive of my brother's family, but I am feeling lost about what autism means for my nephew's life. Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental condition that affects communication, behavior, and social interactions. Certain areas of the brain may be over- or under-connected in children with autism, affecting their ability to process information.

For example, they may have difficulty interpreting social cues, understanding non-verbal communication, or managing sensory inputs.

This can manifest as:

1. Challenges in making eye contact.

2. Delayed speech development.

3. Repetitive behaviors.

4. Heightened sensitivity to lights, sounds, or textures.

Early intervention is crucial.

Treatments often include:

  1. Behavioral therapies: which focuses on teaching social, communication, and learning skills through positive reinforcement.

  2. Speech therapy: Speech therapy can help improve communication skills, while occupational therapy can assist with daily living skills and sensory integration.

In some cases, medications may be prescribed to manage specific symptoms, like anxiety (excessive worry) or hyperactivity. He will benefit from a structured environment with clear routines and expectations. Social skills training can help him learn how to interact with peers and build friendships. It is also important to provide him with opportunities for inclusion in typical activities, which can promote social learning and acceptance.

Research into the genetic and neurological aspects of autism is ongoing, which may lead to more targeted interventions in the future. Technology is also playing a role, with apps and devices designed to assist with communication and social skills. Always remember that a physical examination by a doctor in a hospital is a must for a comprehensive assessment.

I hope this helps.

Thank you and take care.

Regards.
