Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a male aged 32 years, and I stay with my family. I have been hearing a lot about the evolving avian flu. I wanted to know about the modes of spread because I have dogs and cats all over my apartment. Will they be carrying the virus? Should I stay away from them? How are humans affected by it? What are the precautions to be taken? How to find out whether any bird or animal is affected by the flu?
Kindly suggest.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com
I understand your concern.
Avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, primarily affects birds but can occasionally infect humans and other animals. It is caused by influenza A viruses. The virus spreads among birds through direct contact with secretions from infected birds, such as saliva, nasal secretions, and feces. Humans can contract the virus through direct or indirect contact with infected birds, contaminated surfaces, or environments. Although human-to-human transmission is rare, it can occur with close contact. While rare, there have been instances of dogs and cats contracting avian flu from eating infected birds. However, there is no strong evidence to suggest they play a significant role in spreading the virus to humans. To mitigate any risks, it is wise to prevent your pets from interacting with wild birds or scavenging bird carcasses. The symptoms in humans may include:
Fever.
Cough.
Sore throat.
Muscle aches.
Severe respiratory illness, including pneumonia (an infection that inflames the air sacs in one or both lungs, which may fill with fluid or pus).
Symptoms in birds include:
Sudden death without prior signs.
Respiratory distress.
Swelling of head, neck, and eyes.
Decreased egg production.
Diarrhea.
Symptoms in pets include:
Respiratory issues.
Lethargy.
Loss of appetite.
Precautions to be taken:
Keep a safe distance from wild birds and avoid contact with sick or dead birds.
Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water after handling birds or being in bird environments.
Prevent pets from interacting with wild birds and avoid feeding them raw poultry.
Ensure poultry and eggs are cooked thoroughly.
Identifying infected birds and animals:
Look for unusual behavior or symptoms mentioned above.
Consult a veterinarian if you notice any signs of illness in your pets.
Report sick or dead wild birds to local authorities.
Action steps you need to take:
Monitor local news and health advisories for updates on avian flu.
Maintain good hygiene and take preventive measures to protect yourself and your family.
Ensure pets are supervised and kept away from potential sources of the virus.
It is understandable to be concerned, but with proper precautions, the risk can be managed. If you have any specific symptoms or concerns, consulting your physician and a veterinarian can provide further peace of mind.
I hope this helps.
Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.
Thank you.
