Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a 30-year-old female, and I am quite concerned about the recent outbreaks of avian influenza. The news coverage has been alarming, and I am unsure about the most effective ways to protect myself. Could you explain what avian influenza is and how it is transmitted? I have heard that following a plant-based diet may help boost immunity and reduce inflammation, Is there any scientific evidence to support the idea that a vegan or vegetarian diet can protect against avian flu? I am considering making dietary changes but want to ensure they are effective preventive measures.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
According to the world health organization (WHO) and the latest guidelines issued by the FSSAI (Food safety and standards authority of India), avian influenza does not spread to humans via poultry eggs, and meat. Therefore, it is safe to consume eggs and chicken, provided they come from uncontaminated sources, are cooked at high temperatures, and proper hygiene practices are followed.
Avian influenza is a slightly misleading term, as influenza is among the natural infections found in birds. The term avian influenza used in this context refers to zoonotic human infection with an influenza strain that primarily affects birds.
Nutritional guidelines suggest that the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for protein is between 0.03 ounces of protein per pound of body weight. Every individual should aim at eating at least two to three servings of vegetables and fruits a day. While fruits rarely have good proteins, you will be surprised to learn that there are plenty of vegetables that pack high protein. Spinach, Bok choy (Chinese cabbage), mustard greens (Indian saag), cauliflower, mushrooms, artichoke, green peas, corn, and broccoli are all rich in protein and can match your daily needs.
I hope I have answered your question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards.
