Why is my active 6-month-old baby not rolling over yet?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My baby is six months old, and he is not able to roll over. Otherwise, he is perfectly active and has achieved all other milestones. Is this dangerous or normal?

Kindly advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read the query and understand the concern.

The milestones of an infant occur within a range, and some variations are normal. If there is a delay in only one milestone, it can often be observed while monitoring other developmental milestones.

Please provide some additional details. Was the baby born full-term, and what were the birth weight and current weight? Also, please share other milestones, such as when the baby developed a social smile, when he started holding his head steady, and whether he can lift his head and chest while lying on his tummy and bear some weight on his arms.

If there is an older sibling, it would also be helpful to know about that child’s developmental milestones for comparison. The upper limit for the rolling-over milestone is around six months. Therefore, this can be considered borderline but may still be normal if other milestones are appropriate.

At this stage, it is too early to conclude that it is abnormal. It is advisable to wait and watch while monitoring development. Please share the additional information so that further guidance can be provided. Ensure proper feeding, including breastfeeding, and begin weaning foods as appropriate. Continue vitamin D (Cholecalciferol) drops.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you.
