Is it normal for my 10-day-old baby not to poop in 24 hours?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My baby is 10 days old, and he has been recovering from jaundice after phototherapy. he is actively getting fed. Also, he has peed around four to five times daily and pooped until yesterday. But today, he has not even pooped once in the last 24 hours. Why so?

Please guide.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concerns.

If the baby is active and feeding well, it is normal for a 10-day-old baby to pass stool anywhere from 10 times a day to once every seven days. Both scenarios are perfectly acceptable. As long as the baby is feeding well, staying active, and urinating more than five times a day, there should be no concerns regarding bowel movements.

You can be patient and continue breastfeeding as advised. Additionally, keep an eye on the consistency and color of the stools. It is common for breastfed infants to have yellow, seedy stools. Still, any drastic changes in color or consistency, or if the baby appears irritable or uncomfortable, should be discussed with a healthcare professional.

Regular check-ups will also help ensure that the baby is growing and developing as expected.

I hope this answers your query. Feel free to reach out anytime.

Thank you.
