Is increased head circumference normal for 45 days baby?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My baby is 45 days old. He is sleeping well, has gained weight of 3.53 pounds, and has increased his head circumference by 1.5 inches. Is there any problem?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

The head circumference of infants normally increases by about 0.5 centimeters per week. Your baby has gained 3.53 pounds of weight which is very good and compared to this head growth is normal on the higher side. Age-wise it is absolutely normal.

Measuring head circumference is quite tricky and the chances of error are high. If not taken properly, you may get a wrong reading. I suggest you to check it properly from the forehead just above the eyebrows to maximum prominent point on the back of the head. Take three readings with a non-stretchable tape and get the average.

As your son was a low birth weight baby, you need to monitor all his parameters properly, weight, height, head circumference, and milestones achieved for age.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Thank you.
