Can a combination of antibiotics and an antihistamine help in treating a bacterial infection along with itching?

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Since this morning, I have noticed a pimple-like bump on the backside of my penis. While it resembles a pimple, it is not exactly the same. It is both itchy and painful. What could this be?

Please suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern, and after reviewing the picture (attachments removed to protect the patient’s identity), if there has been unprotected sexual contact, it is important to consider the possibility of a sexually transmitted infection (STI). I recommend getting the following tests: TPHA (treponema pallidum hemagglutination), HPV DNA PCR (human papillomavirus DNA polymerase chain reaction), herpes simplex virus IgG (both type 1 and 2), herpes simplex virus IgM (both type 1 and 2), chlamydia trachomatis IgG, HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) 1 and 2 antibody screening test, HbsAg (hepatitis B surface antigen), and a urine complete analysis.

If the issue is not related to sexual contact, it could be a simple bacterial infection. In that case, you can use Mupirocin ointment for local application and take Doxycycline 100mg twice a day for five days. If there is itching, you should consider a fungal infection, and you can use Beclomethasone and Clotrimazole for local application. For itching relief, you can take one tablet of Cetirizine at night. Remember to maintain good hygiene by washing your genital area twice a day with lukewarm water and using a mild soap, avoiding hot or cold water.

Thank you.
