Can a weakened immune system increase meningitis risk at 48?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 48 years of age and have an impaired immune system due to other diseases. Recently, I have gone through the literature about diseases caused by pneumococcus and bacterial meningitis. It has created worry within me.

I know my immune system is not in good condition, which makes me wonder if it could make me more susceptible to this disease. Am I supposed to be more worried about bacterial meningitis than an average individual?

Please guide me.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Your concerns have been understood.

It is very natural to be fearful after learning about deadly diseases when you know that your immune system is compromised.

As far as general knowledge goes, people who are immunocompromised are always at a greater risk of getting infections than those who have a normally functioning immune system. This does not mean you will get meningitis, but several things will make your chances of contracting it a lot lower.

The first thing is to ensure that you are protected against several diseases through proper vaccinations, specifically the pneumococcal vaccination and any other that your doctor may recommend based on your current state of health.

The second is to maintain optimal health and report to the doctor immediately if you develop signs of infection, such as fever, headache, neck stiffness, confusion, photophobia, and rashes.

I hope that answers your question.

Thank you and take care.

Regards.
