Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am experiencing redness on the front side of the corona of my glans penis, as well as a few centimeters underneath on the foreskin. I have already been tested for sexual diseases, and the results were negative. The doctor initially diagnosed it as balanitis, so I was prescribed Canesten, which provided relief, but the itching returned when I stopped using it. This has been going on for about six months now, and I find myself needing to use cream continuously to manage the itching. I am confident that it is not related to my underwear or washing routine, as I have been very careful with those aspects lately.
I recently started avoiding alcohol when hanging out with friends every week, as the itching began around the same time I started drinking more. Could excessive alcohol consumption potentially cause balanitis? While I am not entirely sure if there is a connection, it is the only possible cause I can currently think of. The affected area varies in appearance, sometimes appearing red and at other times seeming perfectly fine. However, the itching consistently returns once I discontinue using the cream. I am currently using a tea tree oil moisturizer due to concerns about overusing Canesten.
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and understand your concern.
Balanitis typically arises due to an overgrowth of yeast or bacteria on the skin. It can be prompted by factors like inadequate hygiene, irritation from certain products, or underlying health conditions. While excessive alcohol consumption might potentially weaken the immune system and contribute to skin issues, there is no direct evidence linking it to balanitis.
It is important to note that each individual's body reacts differently. To get a precise diagnosis and appropriate treatment, I would suggest you consult with a dermatologist. Their expertise could offer more tailored guidance.
Using a tea tree oil moisturizer is a wise choice, considering the possible downsides of excessive Canesten (Clotrimazole) use. How has the tea tree oil moisturizer been working for you? Have you tried any other approaches that provided relief?
Thank you.
