How to completely get rid of the symptoms of balanitis?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been using Miconazole 2 percent with Hydrocortisone 1 percent for 17 days (along with oral Levofloxacin 500 mg for 10 days), followed by Mupirocin for seven days, then a combined treatment for another 10 days. Most of my balanitis symptoms, like glans pain, meatus zings, urethral discomfort, and sensitivity, have cleared up, but there is still some blotchy redness on my glans.

I have maintained good hygiene (washing with water only) and make sure to dab dry after every urination. My foreskin can fully retract, and I can cover it back up without issues.

I have not used any oral antifungal or antibacterial treatments recently, and my ointments are nearly finished after three weeks of consistent use.

What else can I do?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through your query.

Persistent redness on the glans may be due to lingering irritation or mild inflammation, even after the primary infection has cleared.

Here is what you can do:

1. Maintain hygiene: Continue washing with water only and patting dry to avoid further irritation.

2. Avoid harsh soaps or shampoos that could prolong the redness.

3. Do not use Hydrocortisone or antifungals without your doctor’s approval, as overuse can cause skin thinning or irritation.

4. Switch to a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer to soothe and protect the glans as they heal.

5. Zinc oxide can help as a mild anti-inflammatory and create a protective barrier without the risks of corticosteroids.

6. Consult a dermatologist: A professional must examine the area and determine if a short course of oral antifungals is needed.

7. Remember that balanitis can sometimes leave lingering redness or hyperpigmentation, which should fade gradually.

8. Avoid sexual activity that could irritate the area until the redness fully resolves.

9. A visit to a dermatologist is essential for a proper evaluation.

Feel free to reach out if you have more questions.

I hope it helps.

Thank you.
