How long does it take to feel normal after a sinuplasty?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I had a sinuplasty and turbinate reduction six weeks ago, and I am still having a weird airflow sensation. Everything feels really open. When should this start to feel more normal, or when should my body start adjusting to it?
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I have gone through your query and understand your concern.
It is normal to have this feeling of extreme nasal opening after a turbinate reduction (a surgical procedure to improve airflow), especially when you have had extremely enlarged turbinates prior to surgery. The inferior turbinate is the rate-limiting segment of the nose, which means all the initial resistance is created by that structure.
Once a reduction is done, there will be a sudden drop in the resistance, giving a sudden free and open pathway for breathing, which can be bothersome in the beginning and will eventually ease once there is normal replacement of the tissue that has been reduced. This will take roughly three to six weeks.
In short, you should not worry about these symptoms, as they are very common in patients after surgery.
I would suggest that you do the nasal washes that we routinely recommend to all patients after surgery.
Continue attending your follow-up appointments so your surgeon can monitor the healing process and ensure that everything is progressing as expected. Avoid picking your nose or exposing it to irritants, as this can delay healing and increase discomfort.
I hope I have answered your question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
Thank you.
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
Thank you for the reply.
I am six weeks post-op now, so it should be getting more comfortable and feeling more normal pretty soon.
- Is there still dryness in the nose at this time frame?
- How long till the moisture comes back to my nose?
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
Yes, absolutely, you should get back to normal after a few weeks. You can use Solu-Spre (normal saline) nasal sprays five to six times. It will help to keep the nasal cavity moist for the time being. Both symptoms should resolve in a couple of weeks.
I hope it helps.
Thank you.
