Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I had a gastric sleeve done three years ago, and since then I have been dealing with severe reflux. I never had GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) before the surgery, but now I feel like I cannot eat without burning my chest. My surgeon said I might need a gastric bypass to fix it, but I am scared about another surgery. Is there any way to manage this without more surgery? Also, is it true that weight loss surgeries can cause more acid reflux in some patients?
Kindly suggest.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) is a common issue after gastric sleeve surgery due to increased pressure in the stomach, which can lead to acid reflux. Non-surgical management options include medications like proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) or H2 blockers to reduce stomach acid, along with dietary changes such as avoiding trigger foods (spicy, fatty, or acidic), eating smaller, more frequent meals, and not lying down immediately after eating. Lifestyle modifications like elevating the head of your bed, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding smoking or alcohol can also help alleviate symptoms.
In some cases, weight loss surgeries can contribute to or worsen acid reflux. If non-surgical methods do not provide relief, a gastric bypass might be considered, as it can reduce acid reflux by creating a new stomach pouch and bypassing part of the stomach and small intestine. It is essential to discuss your concerns with a healthcare provider to determine the best treatment for your specific condition. Feel free to book a consultation with me for further guidance.
