Can a Bartholin cyst heal with medicines alone?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am having a cyst-type swelling on my vagina. It is swollen on one side. I feel itching sometimes. It has been swollen for a few months, but nowadays it is getting worse, and when I sit or wear tight pants, I get pain.
Kindly help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and understood your concern.
It is normal for you to be bothered if you have any abnormal growth in any part of your body or the vagina, as in your own case, as this can affect not just your sexual life but also your mental health.
The swelling (cyst) you have is called a bartholin cyst. This is a cyst that results from the blockage of the duct (outlet channel) of the Bartholin gland. The Bartholin gland is responsible for secretions that are released during sexual stimulation to aid in lubrication. So, once the duct blocks, these secretions start accumulating, causing the gland to swell, as in your case, resulting in a bartholin cyst.
The size continues to increase if left unattended, and as it increases in size, it often becomes painful, causes obstruction to the vaginal opening, and can sometimes become infected, resulting in it transforming into a bartholin abscess with more severe pain.
For now, you can take a course of Doxycycline 100 mg twice a day for ten days and do a sitz bath. This may help with the pain and itching. The definitive treatment is a minor surgical procedure called marsupialization. That is better, and the recurrence rate after the procedure is significantly lower.
Get the medication, do a sitz bath, and book an appointment to see a gynecologist for a physical examination and possible workup for surgery.
I hope that this answers your query.

Hello doctor,
Thank you for the reply.
Will only medicines not cure it? Is it because of sex?
Kindly help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
I read your query and understood your concern.
Most times, it will require surgery. The surgery is a minor surgery, and you will fully recover within 10 to 21 days after the surgery and go back to a better sexual life.
I hope that this answers your query.
