Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 17-year-old male, and I have been dealing with frequent belching for a few months. It feels like my stomach and neck are constantly filled with gas. I have tried drinking antacids, but they do not seem to help. How can I fix this?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through your query and understood your concern.

Belching is often caused by swallowing excess air, which can happen due to:

1. Eating too quickly,

2. Drinking carbonated beverages or

3. Anxiety.

It is also important to rule out conditions like:

1. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

2. Aerophagia (swallowing too much air).

Since antacids have not helped, the issue might not be due to excess stomach acid. GERD, which involves stomach acid moving back into the esophagus, can sometimes cause belching, heartburn, a sour taste in the mouth, or discomfort in the chest and throat. If you are not experiencing heartburn, the problem may be more related to how your body processes gas.

Here are some suggestions that might help you:

1. Avoid carbonated drinks, chewing gum, and foods that tend to produce gas, such as beans, onions, and certain vegetables (like broccoli and cabbage).

2. Eat slower to reduce swallowing excess air.

3. Eating smaller, more frequent meals can also help reduce gas buildup.

4. Reduce stress by practicing deep breathing or relaxation exercises.

It is essential to see a gastroenterologist for a physical examination, and an endoscopy might be recommended to investigate further.

Feel free to reach out if you have more questions, and I hope you feel better soon.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
