I missed a few contraceptive pills. Will I get pregnant?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I missed multiple birth control pills for three days and started taking them again. I had unprotected sex, but I also missed a couple of pills a few days ago, which I took the following morning, and missed them again the next day. Is it fine?

Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Thank you for explaining the timeline clearly. Missing multiple birth control pills in between in the last month and then restarting after three days and continuing to miss additional pills for a few more days again means that your pill protection was not reliable during this entire period.

Because you also had unprotected sex till last week, there is a real possibility of pregnancy, especially since ovulation can happen when pills are missed this frequently. What is important now is what can still be done right now.

If it has been within five days (120 hours) of the most recent unprotected sex, emergency contraception (such as Ulipristal or a copper IUD (intrauterine device)) can still reduce the risk of pregnancy, but this would require seeing a doctor immediately for evaluation.

You should continue taking your birth control pills daily without missing any more, but use backup protection (condoms) for at least the next seven days.

If your next period is late, lighter than usual, or does not come, take a pregnancy test about 14 days after the last unprotected sex or immediately if your period is missed.

I hope you find this helpful.

Feel free to reach out to me anytime for more queries.

Thank you.
